The small Cumbrian village of Westlinton, close to the River Lyne, is located 5 miles north of Carlisle. On Thursday 8th April 1852 it played host to the Carlisle and Cumberland Steeplechases under the stewardship of Mr M B Harrison and Mr W R Carruthers. The card opened with the 3 mile Handicap Steeplechase which went to Mr J Laing’s Pride of the North, while the Border Open Selling Stakes was won by Mr J Lamplugh’s Falcon. The feature Carlisle Stakes, over 3 miles, was won easily by Black Diamond who made all for Mr Dicke. |
